The Build Virtual Machines workshop is an interactive, hands-on training course covering the fundamental principles, tools, and real-world applications of modern virtualisation technologies. Participants will learn how to create, configure, and deploy virtual machines in both local and cloud environments, working across three major virtualisation ecosystems: Microsoft Hyper-V for enterprise-grade virtualisation, Oracle VirtualBox for flexible cross-platform testing, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) for scalable cloud infrastructure.

What You Will Cover
Five modules take you from virtualisation fundamentals through to building, configuring, and connecting virtual machines across three industry-standard platforms, followed by a hands-on final project.
Learn what virtualisation is, why it matters, and how it is used across desktop, server, and cloud environments. Explore the benefits — cost savings, flexibility, testing, and scalability — and get an overview of Hyper-V, VirtualBox, and AWS EC2.
Enable Hyper-V on Windows, navigate Hyper-V Manager, create and configure virtual machines, understand virtual networking basics, and install operating systems from ISO files.
Install and configure VirtualBox, apply patches, create virtual machines, explore VirtualBox networking modes, and set up operating systems from an ISO file.
Configure virtual switches, adapters, and network isolation. Understand VHD/VHDX vs. cloud storage, local resources, and network adapter settings for optimal performance.
Build a VM in Hyper-V and a VM in VirtualBox. Configure networking and test connectivity, access other networks and virtual switching, and perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance.
Create a virtual environment using your platform of choice. Configure networking, storage, and OS installation, then demonstrate connectivity and management. Produce a component list, budget, performance expectations, and build rationale.
